Call to Action #20 for January 2009

Celebrate Your Heritage by Participating in the

Events of Immigration Sunday on January 4th

We’re all immigrants! Each of us can go back through generations in our families and trace our origins to somewhere else in the world – maybe Europe or Asia or Africa or Australia. Sunday, January 4th, will be celebrated as IMMIGRATION SUNDAY throughout the Archdiocese, as the kickoff to National Migration Week , to encourage a spirit of solidarity among us. Everyone at CTK can participate in the activities that are planned around Immigration Sunday, starting today:

  • Find the large world map near the stairwell from the Gathering Space and insert a colored pin in your country of origin.
  • Write your country of origin on a name badge and wear it during and after Mass on Immigration Sunday. A supply of badges will be available – and distributed – in the Gathering Space.
  • Go down to the Social Hall after Mass and bring your favorite ethnic sweetbread – appropriately identified, like “Irish soda bread” – to add to the donuts.
  • While you’re in the Social Hall stay and hear Sr. Margaret McGuirk from Holy Rosary Parish talk about her experiences ministering to families who are struggling with immigration issues on a daily basis.
  • Keep in mind all during Migration Week – and beyond – that it is our obligation as Catholics to bring hope to the hopeless and seek justice for those, like immigrants, who are easily exploited. It’s important that all communities reach out to and advocate for those who have come to our country seeking a better life.

  1. I love this idea!! Can’t wait to make up some Scottish shortbread for Sunday. Thanks so much for bringing this issue to the forefront.
